Making homemade gifts using melted crayons along with other materials that we all have taking up space in our homes is a gratifying way to make something with your kids and reduce waste. What could be a better way to celebrate the holidays together while teaching your children something at the same time? Making gifts from recycled materials shows children the value in reusing and that it truly is the thought that counts when giving a gift. Try these craft ideas and enjoy your time together as a family!
Melting Crayons
Melted crayons are the key materials to both craft ideas. Adults should be present at all times when working with hot wax.
- Peel all paper off of crayons and brake them into small pieces.
- Put crayon pieces (same colors together or colors that you want to mix) into foil or silicone cupcake wrappers in a muffin tin and place in a 200ºF oven for about five minutes (or until crayons are liquid).
How to Make Fire-Starters With Broken Crayon Pieces and Recycled Paper
A decorative fire starter is an attractive gift for avid campers or anyone who enjoys a warm fire during those cold winter months.
You will need:
- Melted crayons
- Shredded paper
- Pine cones or balled up paper
- String or raphia
Directions:
- Pour melted crayons into an old (warm) sauce pan.
- Shred colored paper and lay out a thick layer on to a tray.
- Tie a string to the top of a pine cone or balled up piece of scrap paper.
- Dip the cone or ball into the melted crayon until it is covered and drag through the shredded paper.
- Allow the melted crayon to cool, but not harden, and press the paper into the wax.
- Repeat the process until the project looks just right to you!
Making Christmas Ornaments With Melted Crayons
- Find a candy making tray at a craft store in your desired shapes. Around any holiday there are appropriate seasonal shapes on display.
- Melt crayons in the oven or in the microwave (in a wax coated paper cup).
- Pour wax into the candy molds.
- Place string or raphia in the shape of a loop in the top of the shape once the wax has cooled enough to touch, but has not hardened.
- Allow the wax to completely cool and harden. Then remove from the tray.
With some modification, these crafts can be great for any time of the year. Nothing beats making something beautiful and useful out of something that you would have otherwise thrown in the garbage.
